Our master interviewer, Ben Crogan sat down with Gunner of Daredevil Jane.
So, what’s going on in the world of DAREDEVIL JANE right now? As of right now…..we have been touring and playing off of Method to Madness for the last year and a half. We took the last couple of months off to write for our next album which we started recording in July. We are looking to have an early fall release followed up by a lot of touring to promote the record.
By the way, how did DAREDEVIL JANE come into existence? We all met through friends in San Diego. Micah was playing with Chris O’Brien at first. They were looking for a singer and heard about me through a friend. Matt and Micah are brothers. Matt actually tried out on drums at first but ended up playing rhythm guitar. Trevor was found through one of Matt’s friends. We had been auditioning drummers for a while and found him at the last minute.
Has the band always been composed of the same individuals? The band started off under a different name but Daredevil Jane didn’t really start until we have the line up that we have now.
How’s the SD scene treating you lately? It’s good. It’s home. We don’t really play here all that often anymore. We try and pick and choose our shows. But, we like it though.
I see you also claim LA? How’s your success up there? It’s been good for us so far. There is a bigger rock and roll scene up there so it’s easier for us to fit in with the different venues and bands.
So, Rock and Roll sucks right now, soooo many bands out there?I wouldn’t go as far as to say that it sucks. In fact, I think there has been better bands in the last few years then there has for a while.. I don’t think it’s that there are too many bands; it’s just that there isn’t enough playing good rock and roll. A lot of people think it sucks right now because they only listen to what’s on the radio. If you do a little research and look around, you can find some really good bands out there. They just might not be the ones that you see on TRL. But, if you are looking at bands on TRL, you probably don’t have an idea of what a good band is anyway.
Any grievances with the Rock scene right now?I think our only grievances with the rock scene is that a lot of people would rather go listen to a DJ spin Nelly and Usher, than going to see a live band kick their (explicit) asses! It’s sad to see some nerd getting hired to play an iPod rather then people going to see the bands themselves.
What would you say is your favorite local gig? Any show at Soma is our favorite. The kids believe in us and have the same hopes that we do.
When you guys aren’t playing, do you hang out together, or are you too cool? We only hang out at shows together. We don’t even know each others phone numbers. Most of our conversations and song writing takes place through smoke signals.

HAHA, where can we find the boys of DAREDEVIL JANE on the weekend? Just depends on what’s going on. We’re not one of the scenester bands. So you probably wont catch us hanging out at the spots were everyone looks like they are in a band. We like to spend our extra time working on new songs. So we would probably end up at our studio.
Tell us about your Viper Room show, heard it was nuts? Yea it was a cool show. We played a show at UCLA a while back and every time we play in LA now the school shows up on party busses. None of them can walk or talk but they manage to sing through the songs. The LA shows have been going really good for us.
By the way, who is Jane? To keep it short. She was a homeless lady in the Cardiff area. Gunner new her. She used to hang out in front of the vintage clothing store HOME.
Do you all wear bandanas all the time? It is a rocker must! Only on bad hair days.
What would you classify DDJ as? I know you’re Rock, but what kind? You know, Soft Rock, Hard Rock, Butt Rock, Hate Rock, etc…. We are a straight up rock band. We'll play whatever we like. We don’t write songs based on if they fit only one mold. I think that we have developed our own little nitch that people will hear on our next album.
Do ladies jock you when you’re on stage, or is the crowd mostly dudes hurting each other? I think that we have a good balance. There are a lot of girls though. Probably more girls than guys which is a good thing.
I truly enjoyed the music video I saw for “The Show.” Who directed that? That was done by Parker Siglin. He does all of our art direction stuff. He is really good and helps us out all the time.
Do you guys have girlfriends or do you just pimp on groupies? None of us have girlfriends.
What about your families? All of our families are from San Diego and are really into the band. They are at a lot of our shows. Matt and Micah’s family are at almost all of them. Not just there parents but the whole fam. It’s pretty cool.
Where can we see Double-D Jane perform at next? Our next San Diego show is at the belly up on August 10th , then we are at the Casbah on August 27. I know that we are putting together some CD release party shows though too.
Double-D Jane? I think she’s already in the adult entertainment industry? Not sure
Any other ventures besides music that you guys dabble in? A few of us have started writing music for jingles. I know that’s not spelled write. Just little clips for commercials.
Have to ask, where’s the best place for happy hour? The Night Owl on Garnet Street. I think that there happy hour starts at 7am.
Any shout outs or last words? Thanks to all the people that support us by coming out to the shows and playing our music.
